The family used to discuss various topics on dinner time but never on ghost or supernatural elements. One night when the entire family was asleep, Mr. Otis heared some sound like the clank of metal, outside his room. He got up and without getting feverish came out his room. He saw an old man with red eyes, long grey hair, his garments were soiled and ragged and his wrists and ankles hung heavy shakles. Mr. Otis gave him a small bottle of Tammany Rising Sun Lubricator saying that it was very effective on one application and that he would give him more if needed it. Saying that he went back into his room. The Canterville ghost got shocked. Leaving the bottle he started  for his room but on the stair case he was showered with pillows. The ghosts got scared and vanished.
On reaching his small secret chamber, the ghost recovered his breath. The ghost  had never been treated so badly in past three hundred years. The ghost recollected his memories of terrorising various people like Dowager Duchess, rector of the paarish, Sir William Gull, Old Madame de Tremouillac by simply grinning at them or by blowing their candles or by appearing as a skeleton sitting on an armchair. Similarly he remebered other incidents like the butler who shot himself on seeing a green hand on the window, Lady Stutfield had five finger burnt mark in her throa who drowed herself at last. He felt insulted and determined to have his revenge.
