How i Taught To My Grandmother To Read.

Summary In English

when the narrator was a girl of twelve years. she lived with his grandparents in a village in north karnataka. At that time triveni was a popular writer in a kannada languaue. She wrote about complex pyscological problems in the lives of ordinary people. One of her novels called 'kashi yatra' appeared as serial in the kannada weekly 'karmaveer'. It was the story of an old lady who had a strong desire to go to kashi or varanasi. She believed, like most Hindus that going to kashi and workship. Lord Vishweshwara is the ultimate punya. She was shaving money for  this purpose. But she comes across an orphan girl who wanted to marry a youngman but had no money. The old woman gave desire to go to kashi. She said that the girl's happiness was more important than her going to kashi.
     
 The narrator's grandmother was illiterate. Like the old woman she too had a strong desire to go kashi. The narrator read the in the Karmaveer to her grandmother aas it appeared every week The grandmother eagerly waited for the arrival of the magazine. When she went to temple she discussed the story was going to end.

Once the narrator went for a wedding to a neighbouring village. There she stayed on for a week. In the meantime 'karmaveer' arrived The grandmother was eager to hear the story. She wanted someone to read the story to her. But the narrator whom she depended, was not there. She could not ask anyone to read the story  to her. When the narrator returned to her village, she found the grandmother in tears.
She had realised that dependence on anyone was painful. She regretted that when she was a child, She had not been to school. Now she had resolved to learn to read. She asked the narrator to teach her grandmother to read kannada. She was now sixty-two years old but she belived that one could learn at any age, and one can overcome all obstacles.

The narrator started teaching grandmother. The grandmother worked hard, and achieved har goal. By the Dassara festival she could read a book by herself.

On the Day of Saraswati  Pooja, the grandmother called the narrator to the pooja place. She gave the girl frock material and then bent down and toched her feet. The girl was surprised because traditionally the young touch the feet of their elders. But the grandmother explained that she was not touching the feet of her granddaughter but the feet of her teacher. She said a teacher should respectedd irrespective of the gender and age.

 The narrator also touched the grandmother's feet. She presented her a copy of the novel 'Kashi Yatre', because now she was able to read it herself.
