Chapter-4 The Canterville Ghost

Summary In English

After the incident, the ghost felt very week and tired. He did not move from his room for next five days and he gave up the idea of the blood-stain on the library floor. He felt that the Otis family was a low plane of existence and did not deserve the symbolic value of sensuous phenomena. But for the matter of ghosts, he decided to room in the corridor once in a week. He decided to gibber on the window on the first and third Wednesdays of every month. He also kept in mind to take all precautions of not to be acknowledged by any member of the Otis family. He walked slowly and used the Rising Sun Lubricator for oiling his chains. Once he went to Mr. Otis room to get more Lubricator for which he felt a little humiliated. But still in-spite of everything he was never left unmolested. 

The twins kept stretching across the corridor letting the ghost trip in the dark. Once they made him fall form the staircase. This insult enraged him so much that he decided to make a final attempt to assert  his dignity.

He decided to be in the character of 'Reckless Rupert' or ' the Headless Earl' He had not appeared in this disguise for more than seventy years but it had been very successful every time he had used it. It look him a long time to get the makeup but at last everything was ready. He went to the twins room. The door was just ajar. Wishing to enter, he flung open the door and suddenly, splash! A heavy jug of water fell over him. At the same moment, he heard a shriek of laughter. The ghost felt insulted and fled back to his room. The next morning he got cold. The only good thing was that he was not carrying his head along otherwise it would have been worse. After the incident, the Canterville Ghost  gave all of his hope of frightening the Otis family.  The final blow came on 19th September. The ghost was taking a stroll towards the library  when suddenly two figures emerged  waving their arms and shrieked 'BOO' in his ear. The ghost panicked and ran towards  the staircase. But there Washington Otis was waiting  for him with a garden syringe. The ghost took his escape from great iron stove.

 After the incident the ghost was never seen again in the house. Mr. Otis announced the exit of the ghost. Mrs Otis organized a party , the boys played games of poker and Virginia rode her pony accompanied by the Duke of Cheshire who had come to spend  a week of holidays at the Canterville Chase. Even Lord Canterville was also informed about the ghost. But no one knew that the ghost  was still in the house.
